Do eBooks Have Page Numbers?
When you see “page numbers" in ADE (Adobe Digital Editions), or other readers, they are created by the reading software. This happens when the book is loaded for reading. eBooks makers do not create them.
•In ADE, they are shown as changing to a new number every ~1,000 characters (both printing and non-printing characters).
•In Kindle, a new "location number" is displayed, approximately every 128KB (or 250 characters).
While these numbers are very useful while you are proofreading your book, to indicate to your bookmaker where you need changes, as they don’t exist, they are not something that you need to worry about. They won't show up in your final book, as if typed on the page. You can see an example of those "faux" page numbers below, in Jackie Collins' novel "Chances."

Jackie Collin's Chances, in Adobe Digital Editions. Please note the "page number" at the bottom of the screen, indicating "Page 9" of 652. These numbers are created by the device, every 1024 characters or so.

The same eBook in MOBI/Kindle. Now you can see the "location number" at the bottom of the screen--in this format, it's location 66 of 12833! The theory in MOBI is that a new location exists every 250 characters.
